Spring 2009 Seminars

The Survey Research Laboratory (SRL) is offering four introductory seminars on survey research methodology this semester. The series is free to University faculty, staff and students but attendance for each seminar is limited and advance registration is required.

  Introduction to Questionnaire Design

Designing a good questionnaire is a complicated process that includes decisions ranging from questionnaire format and question order to question wording and response categories. The design should aid respondent understanding of questions, recall, and judgment formation, and minimize response editing because of social desirability. The discussion will cover all these aspects of questionnaire design.

  Introduction to Survey Sampling

This seminar will cover the basics of sampling methodology: the importance of using proper sampling techniques, determining the appropriate sampling methodology, and calculating necessary sample sizes. The discussion also will include simple random sampling, cluster sampling, stratified sampling, and multistage samples.

  Web Surveys

This seminar will provide a brief overview of the methods currently available to conduct opinion surveys using e-mail and the World Wide Web. Areas to be covered will include sampling a population, formatting, available software packages, data collection, and methods for data analysis.
