Free Seminars on Survey Research - Spring 2004
The Survey Research Laboratory (SRL) is offering three intermediate seminars on survey research methodology during the spring 2004 semester. The series is free to University faculty, staff, and students, but attendance for each seminar is limited and advance registration is required. You may register for one, two, or all three seminars. Each seminar will be held from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m. and led by senior SRL staff (locations listed below).
To register, send e-mail to krish@srl.uic.edu or call 333-4273. When registering, please be sure to include your full name, e-mail address, department, and whether you are a faculty member, staff, or a student. Registration will be on a first-come, first-serve basis. Notes for individual seminars will be available online just prior to each seminar.
A basic understanding of survey research methods is recommended as a prerequisite.

February 4, 2004 (Wednesday) - Selecting
Socioeconomic Measures for Survey Research
Timothy Johnson
This
workshop will review conceptual and practical considerations in selecting
measures of respondent, household, and community socioeconomic status for use in
social and behavioral surveys. Common measures will be examined, along with the
strengths and weaknesses of each, and common mistakes made in the collection of
these data. Recommended strategies for the collection of socioeconomic data

February 13, 2004 (Friday) -
Questionnaire Design Clinic

The
Questionnaire Design Clinic is questionnaire design by example. Participants are
encouraged to submit, prior to the session, copies of previous or currently
drafted questionnaires that will be used as examples to highlight principles of
question and response wording, type, and order; and questionnaire formatting.

Analysis of Survey Data

This
seminar will provide practical knowledge about how to correctly analyze publicly
available survey data files. The basics of survey data analysis, including
techniques for data screening and adjustment for complex survey designs, will be
addressed. Suggestions for additional topics of interest can be sent to Young Ik
